SERIES: GOD FORBADE IT, BUT YOU PERMITTED IT
๐ SCRIPTURE READING
โNow therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways.โ โ Haggai 1:5
โIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.โ โ 1 John 1:9
๐๏ธ MEDITATION
The purpose of conviction is not to make you remain in condemnation. It is to bring you back to God. Throughout this series, we have examined what happens when God forbids something but we choose to permit it.
We have seen the danger of compromise.
We have seen the influence of wrong associations. We have seen how desires can overpower obedience. We have learned the importance of spiritual boundaries.
We have learned that some things must be removed. But there is another important truth:
If you have compromised, you can still return.
Your mistake does not have to become your permanent identity.
Your failure does not have to be the final chapter.
๐ฅ THE POWER OF REPENTANCE
Repentance is more than saying:
โI’m sorry.โ Biblical repentance involves turning away from the wrong direction and returning to God. The prodigal son is a powerful picture of this. He left his father’s house. He wasted his inheritance. He experienced the consequences of his choices. But eventually, he came to himself.
๐ Luke 15:17โ18
โAnd when he came to himself, he said… I will arise, and go to my father…โ
Notice those words: โI will arise.โ He did not remain in the place of failure. He got up. He returned. He confessed. And the father received him.
Consider David.
David committed serious sins, including adultery and orchestrating the circumstances that led to Uriah’s death. When confronted by the prophet Nathan, David did not continue defending himself. He acknowledged his sin.
๐ 2 Samuel 12:13
โI have sinned against the Lord.โ
David’s repentance did not erase every earthly consequence, but it restored his relationship with God.
Later, David cried: โCreate in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.โ โ Psalm 51:10
True repentance does not simply ask God to remove consequences. It asks God to change the heart.
โ ๏ธ DON’T CONFUSE CONVICTION WITH CONDEMNATION
There is a difference. Condemnation says:
โYou are finished.โ โThere is no hope for you.โ
โYou can never change.โ โGod cannot use you again.โ But God’s conviction says: โThis is wrong. Come back.โ The enemy wants you to hide after you fall. God calls you into the light.
๐ 1 John 1:9
โIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins…โ
Don’t run away from God because you failed.
Run back to Him.
๐ ๏ธ RESTORATION REQUIRES CHANGE
Repentance is not merely emotional.
If you truly recognize that something is wrong, your direction must change.
If you were permitting a relationship that was leading you into sin, establish the necessary boundary.
If you were permitting dishonesty, choose truth.
If you were permitting bitterness, pursue forgiveness. If you were permitting a destructive habit, remove the access and seek appropriate support. If you were neglecting God, rebuild your spiritual disciplines. Repentance changes direction.
๐ฑ GOD CAN REBUILD
The book of Joel contains a beautiful promise concerning restoration.
๐ Joel 2:25
โAnd I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten…โ
God is able to restore. He can restore: Your spiritual sensitivity. Your joy. Your peace. Your discipline. Your relationship with Him. Your purpose. Your confidence. Your usefulness.
But restoration does not mean pretending nothing happened. It means allowing God to redeem what has been broken and teaching you to walk differently.
๐ KINGDOM TRUTHS
1. Confession Opens the Door to Forgiveness
๐ โIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins…โ โ 1 John 1:9
Don’t hide what God is asking you to confess.
2. Repentance Requires a Change of Direction
๐ โRepent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out…โ โ Acts 3:19
Repentance is a turning.
3. God Is Able to Restore
๐ โAnd I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten…โ โ Joel 2:25
Your failure does not limit God’s ability to redeem your story.
๐ PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I come before You with humility.
Where I have permitted what You forbade, forgive me.
Where I have compromised, cleanse me. Where I have ignored Your warnings, give me wisdom.
Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.
Give me the courage to change my direction and remove everything that continually leads me away from You.
Restore my relationship with You and teach me to walk in obedience.
Let my past mistakes become lessons that produce wisdom rather than chains that keep me bound. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
๐ฃ DECLARATIONS
I will not remain in condemnation.
I receive God’s forgiveness as I genuinely repent.
My past mistakes will not define my future.
I have grace to change my direction.
I will not return to what God delivered me from.
My heart is being renewed by God.
I will walk in obedience and spiritual discernment.
God is able to restore what has been damaged.
๐ ACTION POINT FOR TODAY
Take some quiet time with God.
Ask: โLord, what have I permitted that You never approved?โ Don’t defend yourself.
Don’t blame someone else. Don’t minimize it.
Where the Holy Spirit brings conviction, confess it to God. Then identify one practical change that demonstrates your repentance.
Confession without change keeps the door open. Close the door. Establish the boundary.
Change the pattern. Return to God.
๐ SPECIAL INSIGHT
Peter denied Jesus three times.
Yet failure was not the end of Peter’s story.
After the resurrection, Jesus restored him and entrusted him with responsibility.
This teaches us something powerful:
God’s restoration can be greater than your failure.
But restoration begins when we stop running from conviction and start responding to God.
Don’t say: โI have gone too far.โ Instead say:
โI will arise and go to my Father.โ Don’t say: โGod can never use me again.โ Say: โLord, create in me a clean heart.โ Don’t say: โI will always be this way.โ Say: โBy God’s grace, I will walk differently.โ
